Week 11 : The Integral Role of Physical Exercise in Holistic Trauma Recovery


Welcome back to our empowering journey in the "52 Weeks of Holistic Trauma Recovery." I’m  Wellness Coach Liz Blanding, here again to share another essential element of our recovery path. 


Today, we dive into the world of regular physical exercise and its profound impact on trauma recovery.

In the quest to recover from trauma, physical exercise emerges as a method  of strengthening our resilience. It’s more than just a routine; it’s a powerful tool that aids in our overall recovery process. 


The benefits of regular physical activity extend far beyond the physical realm; they seep into our emotional and mental states, providing a holistic approach to recovery. My life changed for the better when I committed to myself and my weekly scheduled exercise. 


Engaging in physical exercise is not just about building muscle or endurance; it's about reclaiming your body. It's about establishing a sense of control and autonomy that trauma often strips away. 


Every movement, every stretch, every challenge we overcome in our physical routines is a step towards recovering a sense of self and confidence. My confidence soared when I reclaimed the flexibility and strength  in my body.  Life was no longer tossing me to and from.  I took control of my life and you can too. 


For many of us, trauma created a disconnect with our bodies, leading to a sense of alienation and discomfort. Regular exercise helps bridge this gap. It encourages us to reconnect with our physical selves, to listen to our bodies, and to celebrate its capabilities. This reconnection is vital in the journey of recovering from trauma. 


Let’s stop right here for just a moment and reconnect with our bodies. This exercise helped me tremendously.  Close your eyes and begin to intentionally be present and feel the sensation of your toes, then slowly scan your feet, focus on  just your feet..  Slowly move up your body and sit with yourself. Continue to move up your body until you reach the top of your scalp. 


Congratulations, for some this is the first body scan you have experienced.  I recommend repeating this exercise at least daily to begin continuing until you start to feel and connect with your body.   It helps to re-establish the connection between mind, body, spirit and soul. Trauma causes a disconnection. The more trauma we suffer the more disconnected we become.

Exercise releases endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators. These endorphins play a crucial role in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, which are often companions of trauma. By incorporating regular physical activity into our lives, we can foster a more positive mood and outlook, which is essential in the long-term recovery process.
