Week 9: Trauma and the Gut-Brain Axis: How Does This Affect My State of Wellness?

Continuing our 52-week journey to recovery and realignment from trauma with DL Blanding.

Welcome to week 9. This week, we delve into an essential and often overlooked aspect of recovery: the Gut-Brain Axis and its role in trauma recovery. Understanding the intricate connection between our gut health and mental state is crucial for anyone navigating the path to recovery from trauma. We are here to support your recovery realignment journey.  Schedule your discovery support session

The connection between our gut health and mental state, known as the gut-brain axis, is crucial, especially in trauma recovery. A balanced gut can significantly influence our emotional health and recovery process.

The gut-brain axis refers to the complex, bidirectional communication network that connects your gastrointestinal tract with your brain. This network involves direct and indirect pathways, including the vagus nerve, immune system, and various neurotransmitters. Essentially, it's a conversation between your gut and your brain, where each can significantly influence the other's functioning.

Trauma can disrupt this delicate balance, leading to a host of issues. When we experience trauma, our body's stress response can alter gut motility, increase gut permeability (sometimes referred to as "leaky gut"), and even change the composition of our gut microbiota. These changes can contribute to inflammation and may exacerbate or lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

A balanced gut microbiome is essential for producing and regulating various neurotransmitters and hormones involved in mood and emotional health, including but not limited to the extremely important serotonin and dopamine.  By nurturing our gut health, we can support our brain's ability to cope with stress, reduce inflammation, and enhance our overall emotional resilience.

Let’s explore together some practical steps to support the gut-brain axis in trauma recovery. As we continue this journey we will see the steps to recovery will repeat and overlap from week to week.  This is why it is essential is an essential step in trauma recovery and realignment to personalize our own self-care plan.

First things first let’s  focus on a nutrient-dense meal plan rich in fiber, probiotics (found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut), and prebiotics (found in foods like garlic, onions, and asparagus). These help nourish and support a healthy gut microbiome.

Engaging in stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness meditation, modern deep stretch yoga, and deep breathing exercises can help modulate the stress response and its impact on the gut.

My favorite, not really but essential is regular physical activity which has been shown to positively affect gut microbiota diversity and improve mood. (Makes us Happy.)

Ensuring adequate and quality sleep is essential for gut health and emotional regulation. Poor sleep can exacerbate stress and negatively impact the gut microbiome. Make sure when you schedule your discovery support session you ask about the non-transdermal patch and my success with enriched deep recovery sleep.  I’d love to share my testimony with you.  You can also check it out on YouTube.
